Fumigation Infomation

Finding all of the termites in your home is nearly impossible, even for our trained inspectors. That’s because termites do their damage in hidden places – inside walls, roof beams and foundation studs. Even to the point where they enter the home is not always visible to an inspector.

Because termite colonies and all of their members are hard to locate, spot treatments often only give partial results. Spot treatment using chemical, freezing, heating, microwaves and electrocution (electricity?) may successfully kill the termites they reach. But, as we know, some termites cannot be located and the ones that are found may be beyond the range of the spot treatments’ effectiveness.

Even if an inspector finds a gallery and can reach it with his equipment, many termites may survive and start a new colony. To make matters worse, many spot treatments risk damage to your home and belongings. If a colony is only partially destroyed, it can rebuild and continue to cause damage. It takes as few as 20 survivors to start producing eggs.

Unlike spot treatment, Vikane gas fumigant spreads into every nook and cranny of your home to kill every termite. It penetrates into the pores of the wood, altering the termite’s breathing space. No termites are beyond its reach. None will be left behind to start a new colony.

Vikane is the treatment of choice for many old historical sites, where multiple hidden colonies have foiled spot treatment attempts. No other Drywood termite treatment compares to Vikane. Vikane has been proven in 25 years of university research, published reports and practical use on homes like yours.

When you return to your home after a treatment with Vikane, nothing will have changed but the termite population. Vikane does not leave a residual anywhere in your home. It completely dissipates into the atmosphere, where it will not destroy the ozone layer. You do not need to wash your dishes, counter tops or clothes after the fumigation.

Think of it this way… Vikane fills your home the way helium feels a balloon. When a balloon is emptied, there is no helium. Similarly, when the tarp is removed and the Vikane has vanished no residue remains.

Although we know Vikane completely dissipates from you home, there is no taking a chance on your family’s safety. All people, pets and plants must be removed from your home. All foods and medicines should be removed or sealed in special containers, according to our instructions. Outside plants close to the house should be watered heavily to help prevent the fumigant from moving into the soil. Vikane will not harm other items in your home.

Before Vikane is released, we will tarp your home to contain the gas. Vikane is tasteless, odorless, and colorless, so chloropicrin (a type of tear gas) is added to warn against entering the structure. When the fumigation is complete and the tarps are removed, your home will be thoroughly checked and monitored by highly sensitive equipment. When the Vikane gas has completely dissipated and its absence has been confirmed with a sophisticated gas detection system, your family may return home.

Only Vikane gas fumigant can give you the confidence that Drywood termites are completely gone from your home. Ask us to explain the fumigation process and we will answer all of your questions.

  • It is the responsibility of the homeowner, occupant, or homeowners' agent, to have all items on this list completed before the crew arrives; failure may postpone the fumigation.
  • Remove all people from the property to be fumigated.
  • Remove vehicles from garage/carport, if included.
  • Remove all interior and exterior plants, whether potted or hanging in/on buildings(s).
  • Remove all pets (including fish and birds). Animals must be removed from the yard - cats included.
  • Notify neighbors with cats to keep pets away during fumigation.
  • Remove all mattresses enveloped in plastic covers such as baby mattresses, etc. or remove covers (this excludes water beds).
  • Open zipped plastic clothes bags.
  • Food, feed, drugs and medicines (including those items in refrigerators and freezers) must be removed form fumigation site or sealed in highly resistant containers such as glass, metal or double-bagged in "Fume bags" or equivalent Methyl Bromide resistant bags. Place one fume bag inside another. Fill inner bag with food and medicines. Twist neck of inner bag tightly to approximately 3/8" in diameter. Fold twisted neck back upon itself tightly and wrap with tape, twist-tie or equivalent, press bag to check for leaks, No air should be able to escape. Repeat with outer bag. Improperly bagged or un-bagged food will be bagged by the fumigator at a rate of $25 per bag.
  • The occupant should soak the soil with water at least 12 inches from the foundation outward, This can be done the evening before and may help to protect plant root growth. Cut back plant growth where possible, 12 to 18 inches away form the exterior of building(s).
  • The occupant must turn off any air conditioner unit, thermostat operated or otherwise. If any burglar alarms are to be left on, leave instructions on operation; movement alarms must be turned off.
  • We must have access to all areas within the structure, including rooms or garages kept locked, so please make key arrangements before the day of the fumigation, this is required by law. Please indicate where the keys are to be left after the fumigation. If walk-in or large safes exist, you must be present to open safe for our inspection before relocking the safe.
  • We request that homeowner or occupant remove antennas when possible: if we must remove them, we will assume no responsibility for any antenna damage or alignment.
  • To ensure complete gas ventilation, the fumigator may sometimes have to open your drawers or cabinet work and closets; you may wish to do this prior to the fumigator's arrival.
  • For insurance purposes, we request you remove and take with you any valuables you deem necessary, such as jewelry, furs, etc.
  • Electricity must be on in the structure being fumigated. If the electricity is turned off when the fumigation crew arrives, this may cause the fumigation to be postponed.
  • Cars should be removed form the structure. In the event a car must remain, keys for the doors and trunk must be provided. A locked vehicle cannot be fumigated and this will cause a cancellation.
  • The owner/occupant or agent shall notify Newport Exterminating of any known construction elements or connections such as ducting, piping, drainage or central vacuum system, that would allow the fumigant to enter any adjacent and/or adjoining structure that is not under fumigation.
